Thorough knowledge of how technical systems behave on the line is a prerequisite for being able to predict that behaviour. Thus, based on historic data and understanding of the use of systems, we can predict how long it can last, whether an adjustment in the maintenance is required and the necessary frequency of maintenance intervals.


In order to examine properly the behaviour of a system various measurements or monitoring, data analytics and model calculations are all used. The measurements enable us to identify the actual condition of a system, using data analytics the statistical connections are recorded and models provide a description of the system such that a prediction for the future, or slightly modified situation, is possible.

A lot is happening at the interface of the wheel and rail. Forces and stresses between the rail vehicle and the track are required for guiding and controlling, accelerating and decelerating. But they also signify wear and fatigue, noise and vibrations and rolling stock movements. In that small contact area it is determined how environmentally-friendly a combination of the rail vehicle and track is, how comfortable it is, how much maintenance is required and what the risks are of derailing or failure of components. Using measurement and model we can help research the optimum combination of wheel and rail.
